Satan’s Slave

(Norman J. Warren/1976/UK)

This is a low budget, independent horror that makes a decent stab (no pun) of creating atmospherics and tension when it’s not overly indulging the soft focus, soft porn opportunities of naked ladies sacrificed and tortured for satanic purposes. With good performances and a script that builds steadily, albeit ploddingly at times, Satan’s Slave displays a penchant for moments of shockingly gory special effects. It’s a good example of what could be achieved outside of big budget studio productions at that time and retains a certain amount of value in that respect whilst not being an extraordinary nor brilliant instance of cinematic horror.
