The Diary of a Teenage Girl

(Marielle Heller/2015/USA)

Detailing the sexual awakening of a young girl in 70’s San Francisco and all the wayward risks and epiphanies that come with that, Marielle Heller does a brilliant job of telling the story without casting a shadow of judgement or moralising over the main character Minnie. Indeed this film is one of empowerment as Minnie narrates her tale throughout and never flinches from expressing her deepest feelings, reasoning and emotional turmoil. It’s a refreshingly honest film that celebrates the excitement in discovering and exploring your body and sexuality with large dollops of humour. Coming of age movies are a genre I have a particular fondness for and I enjoyed this thoroughly from start to finish.

(3.5/5)
